Course Structure

Students enroll in IJLP for one year in either the spring or fall, and advance according to their planned post-program path.

Required Subjects and Required Electives

In addition to required subjects, students must take at least three elective credits in order to complete the program.

  • Japanese

    Students will study the Japanese language at a level matched to their abilities in order to develop the Japanese skills necessary to study in Japan as an international student. The unique curriculum provides the academic and practical communication skills needed to attend a Japanese university at the under-graduate or graduate level. Assistance preparing for the Examination for the Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) will also be provided according to the student’s Japanese level.

  • Japanese Studies

    Learn the necessary basic knowledge (culture, life, society, etc.) for living in Japan through classes and various activities (field trips, study tours, traditional performing arts appreciation, etc.).

    These seminars use an active learning style with the help of IJLP student assistants to advance understanding of and adaptation to Japanese society and student life.

  • Japanese Practicum
    I–IV

    Select from among the following according to your planned future path

    • 1.Intensive Practicum for Written Characters and Vocabulary
    • 2.Strategies for JLPT Preparation (Language Knowledge/Reading/Listening)
    • 3.Strategies for Entering an Undergraduate Program
    • 4.Strategies for Entering Graduate School
    • 5.Intensive Japanese Practicum According to Future Path etc.

Elective Subjects

Students will choose from among the following subjects to meet their needs in preparing for university entrance examinations.

  • English Practicum I and II

    I. Classes for improving English literacy (mainly grammatical skills) for TOEIC Reading and TOEFL Essay Writing.
    II. Classes for improving aural and oral English abilities for TOEIC Listening and TOEFL Speaking.

  • Beginner English

    Aimed at earning credits required for compulsory English classes in undergraduate faculties.

  • Math (Humanities or Science)

    Classes tailored to the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) (Mathematics 1 for Liberal Arts majors, Mathematics 2 for Science majors)

  • Chemistry/Physics/Biology

    A strategies class for the EJU Science examination.

  • Japan and the World
    (General Knowledge) I and II

    A strategies class for the EJU Japan and the World (General Knowledge) exam. I covers Civics and II looks at Geography and History.

Japanese Levels

Students advance according to their Japanese proficiency.
Note: A2–C1 refers to the level standards established by the JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education

  • Advanced

    The goal is Japanese proficiency equivalent to the JLPT N1 level to allow study as an undergraduate or graduate student at a Japanese university.
    You will understand your area of expertise and abstract topics in Japanese and can clearly express your thoughts and opinions.
    (C1 level or higher)

  • Upper Intermediate

    The goal is Japanese proficiency equivalent to the JLPT N2 level to allow study as an undergraduate or graduate student at a Japanese university.
    You will understand Japanese to some extent in a wide variety of situations and can express your thoughts and opinions.
    (Equivalent to B2 level)

  • Intermediate

    The goal is to develop Japanese proficiency equivalent to the JLPT N3 level, which allows use of the language in everyday situations. You will understand straightforward content related to familiar and personal topics and can convey your intentions.
    (Equivalent to B1 level)

  • Advanced Beginner

    The goal is to develop basic Japanese proficiency for communicating in everyday situations.
    You will understand simple explanations and can convey things about familiar and personal topics using short statements.
    (Equivalent to A2 level)

  • Beginner

    The goal is to have basic Japanese abilities for answering simple questions about personal events. You will understand and be able to use common everyday expressions and basic phrases.
